4th/5th Grade Homeschool Plans 2012-2013

August 5, 2012 by Maureen Spell 2 Comments

4th5thgrade homeschool plans

My 10 yr. old daughter will be completing some 4th grade work and doing 5th grade work this year. Here’s what we have lined up for her:

Language Arts:

All About Spelling

She will be continuing with All About Spelling this year. She needs the multisensory approach and we have found this program to be a great fit. Since she has some reading struggles, All About Spelling helps work on her problem areas. It is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach which is a method used with students who struggle with dyslexia.

Lexercise

Earlier this year I had my daughter take a dyslexia screening test at Lexercise. She did not pass so we had her take the full evaluation. You can see my Lexercise post on this dyslexia screening process for more information. So for at least half of the year, my daughter will be doing online tutoring with Lexercise. We have been doing this for at least a month now and I am so impressed with the teaching and process. I’ll be blogging about it in more detail later in the year.

Homeschool Writing Program

We started WriteShop Junior Book D half-way through last year. We will continue with the program. {Check out our writing center in a bag   and my WriteShop Level D Review} I also added The Giggly Guide to Grammar for a little more grammar practice. In addition, she’ll be doing All About Homophones from All About Learning Press.

Science

Homeschool Science Chemistry

My daughter will be doing the same science program as my middle schooler. I try to combine subjects whenever I can, and I feel like this will be a good fit for both of them this year. We are using Christian Kids Explore Science: Chemistry as the spine, and adding several other resources such as The Periodic Table of Elements Coloring Book, Elements of Faith plus a couple other living books dealing with chemists or chemistry.

Math

We are sticking with Teaching Textbooks again for this year.

History

We will finish using Illuminations Year 1, Grades 3-8th this year. Illuminations is an all-inclusive *curriculum, covering Bible, Language Arts (grammar, writing, copywork, spelling and vocabulary), Literature, Science, Humanities (poetry, theatre, music, and art), Geography, History, Life Skills, and Projects. It is a customizable schedule plus includes reader guides, graphic organizers and more. I love that all my kids will be using this program.

Illuminations Year 1 uses Mystery of History Vol. 1 as its history spine.

“This is everything you need for teaching Ancient Civilizations through the time of Christ, all in one book. Chronological, Classical, Complete. This is a truly unique and remarkable new product! Written for 4th – 8th graders but adaptable for the whole family.” -Bright Ideas Press

Electives

Harmony Fine Arts Curriculum

I had every intention on completing this Ancient Art and the Orchestra fine arts program from Harmony Fine Arts last year. We never got started. So this year I’m going to try something different. Usually around the holidays our schedule gets pretty low-key. So for the months of Dec. and January, we will be concentrating on this program. All of my kids will do some version of this program. It fits in the time period we are studying for history and allows us to add fine arts into our curriculum.

This year we are trying out the student planners from Home Educating Family. In the past I printed out assignment sheets, but this year I want her to take some ownership of assignments and learn how to budget her time better. I will also be using some version of the Workbox system with her. Time-management and organization are two skills she struggles with, so this will take some time teaching her these skills.

This is what we have planned for my 4th/5th grader so far this year. I’m sure there be some additions and changes through the year. What’s one new homeschool curriculum/tool/book etc. that you are looking forward to using this year?

Thank you for sharing your plans! I think I”ve stumbled on your blog before. Today I found it on the Not Back to School Blog hop… last week I was reading your posts on Dyslexia and All About Reading. We just found our our sons are Dyslexic and ADD so we having to find new ways to do things. It sure takes a lot of brain power on this mama! I can’t wait to hear about your All About Spelling progress. Thank you for sharing! Oh and we also use a work box system but not planners yet… the boys are in 2nd grade.8

Thank you for sharing your plans! I also have a fourth grader, and we’ll be focusing on language arts a lot this year, too. We’ve used All About Spelling and will continue with that, and it’s our first year with Write Shop (Junior D), so I was happy to see someone with more experience than me using it! I was just trying to figure out a writing center today and loved your great post on yours and how you organized it–it has many ideas I can use.

Have a great start to your year!
