One of my goals for this year is to find healthier products for my family to use. Over the past several months we have started using essential oils instead of turning to over the counter products first. One oil that was on my wish-list while I was pregnant was Gentle Baby. This would be one of the oils to have in your pregnancy oil pack! I didn’t have this oil available while pregnant, but I did get it in time to use with my newborn.
Many newborns have flaky skin. Since my guy was born in the winter, combine newborn flaky skin with winter dry air, and his skin needed some help. I have been trying to make wise choices on what my family applies topically to our bodies, so I was hesitant to use commercial lotions. Instead I turned to some staples I had on hand and made my own lotion. I knew that coconut oil and the essential oil, Gentle Baby, would make a great topical lotion for my newborn while providing many positive benefits.
Benefits of Coconut Oil on skin:
- It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin.
Benefits of Gentle Baby Essential Oil:
- Gentle Baby™ is a soft, fragrant combination of essential oils designed specifically for mothers and babies.
Gentle Baby Contains:
Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), Geranium (pelargonium graveolens), palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), lemon (Citrus limon), jasmine (Jasminum officinale), bergamot (citrus bergamia), and rose (Rosa damascena
This is a super easy recipe. I make it in small batches because a little goes a long way. You will need:
1/4 c. of organic expellar pressed coconut oil
Young Living Gentle Baby Essential Oil
Small container
Measure 1/4 cup of coconut oil. Add about 8 -10 drops of Gentle Baby essential oil. Mix together and place into a small container.
I use this mixture as a baby lotion, for giving my baby a massage, and can be used on the diaper area (don’t double-dip though- you don’t want to contaminate the mixture with waste.) You can also use it on adult skin too! Now coconut oil will not stay a solid depending on the temperature of your home. That’s ok! Use it as an oil mixture the same way. {Note: You can whip the coconut oil with a Kitchen Aide mixer and it will be easier to use.}
Gentle Baby is not just for Children
The recipe above also is great for moms-to-be! Apply on your skin to help prevent stretch-marks! It’s also great for more mature skin too.

This is fantastic – Thank you! What are your favorite pregnancy oils?
Well I didn’t have a huge collection while pregnant, but I used the following:
Valor (love Valor!), Peace & Calming (came in handy often), Lavender, Frankincense, and Lemon. There are a whole bunch more I would have liked to use but didn’t own yet.
I used one drop of lemon oil in a glass of water each day to help keep my blood sugar levels and blood pressure under control. Just make sure you use a glass glass– no plastic!
I used the lavender oil in a foot soak. 1 c. epsom salts, then drop a couple drops of lavender on the salts. Dump into a foot bath and add hot water. Soak your feet for about 10 minutes. This really helped reduce swelling and I believe it helped w/ my blood pressure too. (Do this at night to help you relax and sleep)
Valor I rubbed on my spine when my back was hurting. I also applied it on my wrists before going to a dr. appointment since those appointments were stressing me out.
Peace and Calming I applied on my wrists and neck when I was getting a little stressed.
Frankincense is such a wonderful go-to oil to have. The nice thing is that is can be used on both mom and baby.

gland, one of the most holy oils for anointing the newborn, help in any type of wound healing, enhance immune function and more.” – YL
Wonderful! And I am loving the baby photos – little feet!!
Coconut oil is an excellent lotion for babies and aside from what you have already mentioned, the reason i love it is because i know that if my baby sucks on his oiled hands or feet its OK because there are no chemicals.
My friends daughter even up to 7 months old had dry flaking skin around her ears and ankles even though she would moisturize up to 6 times a day. I suggested coconut oil and within weeks the skin was normal.
Its amazing stuff, get into it.
Can these oils be used in the first trimester? So many conflicting verdicts! Can they be diffused and/or used on the skin. Many thanks
Tania,
Gentle Baby Essential oil can be used all the time. It all depends on the oils you want to use. I’ll send you a more in-depth reply.
I’ve been seeing so many great young living recipes lately using coconut oil, and would especially love to try this one out for stretch mark prevention! I am wondering if you might have a recommendation for an alternative to coconut oil for someone who is allergic to coconut? Thanks!
You could try shea butter or cocoa butter. If using shea, you might need to add a lighter oil with it to help it spread (something like olive oil). You can just mixt Gentle Baby with V6 or another carrier oil and use it more like baby oil instead of a lotion.
Thank you so much! That is very helpful!
I am looking at making my own baby lotion using shea butter, jojoba, and would like to use gentle baby oil but notice it says that there may be a photosensitivity to the sun.. do you think this is something to worry about? I am wanting to use it for my 9 month old and 4 yr old who will certainly be in the sun this summer!
If you will be using it on areas that will see sunlight, then I would possibly consider using lavender oil instead.
Got it Thanks!
I always hear conflicting opinions about using essential oils on children under 6 months old. The only oil I am interested in using on my 7 week old is Gentle Baby but haven’t yet. I’m hesitant after hearing some people say they’re not safe under 6 months old. I can’t see it being any less safe than store bought baby lotion with chemicals in it. Your opinion?
I felt comfortable using certain essential oils on my newborns. Gentle Baby was one of them. I always diluted well i.e. 2-3 tbsp of carrier oil to one drop. If you have the Desk Reference Guide by the Higleys, you can look up under childhood. Debra Raybern also has a book Gentle Babies.
I know this is a little after the fact but you say you always dilute 1 drop oil to 2 or 3 tbsp carrier oil but your gentle baby mixture is 8 to 10 drops oil to 1/4 cup coconut oil. Could you explain?
General rule of thumb: When applying oils to infants and small children, dilute with V-6 Oil. Use 1 to 3 drops of an essential oil to 1 tablespoon of V-6 oil for infants and 1 to 3 drops of an essential oils to 1 teaspoon V-6 oil for children from 2 -5 years old.
