Sometimes when I look ahead at the biology module titles, I start to sweat. Will I be able to help my high schooler understand this when I don’t even remember what it is? Now I do have a basic (very basic) understanding of genetics, but my sleep-deprived brain (due to my sweet little newborn) had a hard time remembering all the terminology. Thankfully a bunch of other bloggers already figured things out and had listed resources to use. One such resource was this fun potato activity called “Spudoodles.” [Yes, the alien-one-eyed one they made after the activity. ;)] You might think high schoolers are above such silly hands-on activities like these, but they are not! In fact, I think they need even more like this. My daughter and her friend told me they enjoyed doing this and it helped them understand what they were learning. {Big thanks to Mr. R. who is taking over the teaching for me these last 2 months! All I had to do was send the potatoes and the printouts.}
Going hand in hand with this activity was the understanding on Punnet Squares. Remember those? Yeah, I didn’t either. Thankfully Mindfully Ramblings had several helpful links and videos that go along with this module. Once I saw a square done, I did remember creating those in biology class. 😉
During this module the students learned about Gregor Mendel and his experiments and findings. This would be the perfect time to add a science biography study. I’ve included a free notebooking page on Gregor Mendel for you to use.
We’re a little over half-way done with our Apologia Biology! Only 5 more modules to go! (We have already completed mod. 1-9, 14, & 15.)
What have you enjoyed about your science curriculum/experiences this year?

Thanks so much for the link! We had a great time making Spudoodles too!
What a great idea! I’m am so with you on the high school science. We haven’t gotten into Biology yet (a little behind) but this is sure to be a hit when we do. Love our Apologia!
