It has been hot. I know, half the U.S. has been in this heat wave too– but it has been putting a damper on my energy and activity levels. The heat has not curbed the energy level of my kids though. My 5yr. old and 3yr. old have especially been very creative with keeping cool outside while still having fun. This is what I found them doing yesterday:
Love my 3yr. old’s outfit—lol. The girls decided to make their own beach in the sandbox.
They were a wet, sandy mess by the time they were done.
I can’t say I was surprised that my girls did this– in fact, you can say that I even encouraged it. It wasn’t too long ago that I had my girls play in the mud for a nature study activity. You can read it by subscribing to The Handbook of Nature Study site. There are so many wonderful tips and and nature challenges included in each issue. I was happy to be able to contribute this month.

How are you keeping cool this summer?
I love these pictures. What I love even more is that you are the kind of a mom that encourages this and relishes in the fact that children are children and this is what they DO. I am not the kind of mom that would let their kids play in the mud, but I am starting to see that I’ve lived life being a little too uptight about these kinds of things. 😉 So — long story short: I admire you!
Glad I read this today. 🙂
I totally agree with Mary. So many moms would go BALLISTIC that they were dirty, their clothes were dirty, and so on. I am definitely a “play in the mud” kind of mom probably because I was that kind of KID! One of my daughter’s favorite memories was running outside during a very heavy storm. We did it on purpose, just for fun!
Love it! As long as we send them to bed clean, right? 😉 I also LOVED everything about your article in the newsletter! I have been doing informal nature study, but what I miss about doing more formal {as in purposed} nature study is that we did is much more often when I purposed to do it! I’m inspired! Thanks, Maureen!
I enjoyed your mud ideas! You’re very brave. Not too sure if this type A mom could handle that; but my kids would sure love to do it! Hopping over from Moments to Remember.

Oh boy! I found my littles doing the same thing this week. Only I was too busy cleaning them up to remember to get a picture first…
I love you friend. I love the way you mother your brood. You inspire me in so many ways, I am so glad I know you!
LOVE it ~ and my kids would be rolling in the mud right along with yours. 🙂
