Learning How to Make Lotion

May 13, 2013 by Maureen Spell 1 Comment

My oldest daughter and I have been experimenting with our essential oils lately! She occasionally has cracked skin on her hands so we thought we’d try to make our own salve. Since I have never made anything like this before, I needed a recipe and a video how-to. I had recently picked up (affiliate) My Buttered Life: The Baby Edition and found a wonderful (and easy) recipe to use there that included video step-by-steps too.

All I needed was:

  • wide-mouth jars or other containers
  • shea butter
  • coconut oil
  • beeswax
  • Lavender essential oil or Gentle Baby essential oil (optional)

I thought I had a bag of beeswax pellets, but could not find it. My local store only had a beeswax bar. If you get a beeswax bar, it will be helpful to have a scale to weigh the right amount. I had to eye-ball 1 ounce of beeswax. 🙂

Everything was melted in a double-boiler. I added lavender essential oil to our batch because lavender is great for supporting the skin. It is also an essential oil that can be used safely by all– babies to adults.

We couldn’t believe how easy it was to create our own salve! I feel good about letting my daughter use this, my infant son, and my elderly father-in-law. I know the ingredients in this product are all beneficial to our bodies and not filled with harmful additives.

Next on my list is to make my own Bug Off! bars for the summer. It is basically the same ingredients, except you’ll need either lavender, citronella, lemon grass or peppermint essential oils.  The recipe can be found in the MadeOn Summer Edition ebook.

Note on essential oils:

I personally use Young Living essential oils because of their Seed to Seal promise. They control EVERY aspect of the oil from when the plant is first planted, to weed management (no pesticides are used!), to harvest to distilling to testing to bottling – everything is done by Young Living’s standards (which far exceed the organic industry standards, BTW).

If you want to get essential oils and learn alongside my supportive community, you can do that right HERE.
