Science Review: Molecules Activity

February 5, 2012 by Maureen Spell 3 Comments

We did a little review activity with my older kids on molecules. I pulled out Christian Kids Explore Chemistry and we read a chapter and did a couple of the activities. Here’s an easy activity to do to illustrate molecules.

The supplies for this activity are easy to find. You will need:
2 markers
2-1″ Styrofoam balls
3-2″ Styrofoam balls
toothpicks

My son is labeling one of the smaller balls. He labeled 2 with the letter O and stuck them together with a toothpick.

It looks like eyes, doesn’t it? Nope that’s not what it is though. Can you guess what this model represents?  Yes, 02 aka oxygen!

He worked on another molecule model too.

I bet you can see what this is representing—no, not Mickey Mouse–water! This activity seems so easy but it is a concrete way to show what H20 means.

We did this review just to touch base on some concepts he studied earlier in his General Science class. I appreciate that the lessons and activities in the book are easy to understand and implement. I’m planning on using Christian Kids Explore Chemistry with my middle daughter next year for her science. The age-range is 4th – 8th grade but could be used with younger siblings tagging along too.

I found you on the Science Sunday hop. I have a thing for chemistry and I love that you're teaching your young kids stuff that is usually saved for high school . . . I'm like that too.

@Michelle — yes, I don't expect them to fully grasp the concepts but at least be exposed to them a little. That way it won't be a complete shock in high school—lol!

Okay, I know it's O for oxygen, but those look so much like eyes!

I'm so tempted by Christian Kids Explore because I love so much of their other stuff, but I also REALLY love our Apologia. So hard.
